Singapore is a large, vibrant, beautiful example of a Southeast Asia metropolis. Compared to the rest of Southeast Asia, this city-state is a bit pricey, but there are also some free entertainment options. There is plenty to do and see in Singapore – here are our top 5 recommendations.
1- Light Show
Singapore has a couple of free light shows to check out. My favorite is Wonder Full, which the Marina Bay Sands puts on every night. It is a spectacular display of lights over the river and city. The best part is that it is entirely free. There are a couple of other light shows throughout the city, but Wonder Full is by far the best. A light show is a must see when traveling to Singeapore.
2- Gardens by the Bay
These gigantic metal trees have become a famous symbol of the city. There is an impressive display of lights and music each night. The show is not very long (about 15 minutes). These gardens are free and open to the public. Head to the top of the rooftop bar to sip on a cocktail while getting the best view of the city.
Singapore has countless options when it comes to shopping. Things are a bit more expensive in Singapore than many other countries in Southeast Asia, but there are better choices and higher quality. In fact, Singapore is so famous for shopping that many travelers will book tickets just for a shopping spree in the malls.
The IMM is the biggest mall in the area, but you should also check out City Square Mall, and Jurong Point. Even if shopping isn’t your thing, wander the malls for a few hours to get a feel for the massive shopping culture throughout the city.
4- The Arts
Few people know this, but Singapore is the art hub of Southeast Asia. Its crowning jewel is the National Gallery Singapore, which houses moderns Southeast Asian art and is the largest display in the entire world. There are also riverside theatrical performances at the Esplanade Theatres. If you are an art lover and interested in the numerous art styles of Southeast Asia, Singapore is a place you will want to add to your bucket list.
5- Eat Food and Experience the Culture
Singapore is a melting pot of Southeast Asia. This means you will find tons of great food options. In fact, it has some of the best Chinese and Indian food I have ever had in Southeast Asia. Because it is such a melting pot, there are always holidays, celebrations, and cultural events throughout the city. This makes Singapore a lively and exciting place to visit all year round.
Singapore is a fantastic city to add to your Southeast Asia bucket list. The area is impressive, offers free tourist attractions, and boasts delicious food. What more could you want out of a holiday?
