Reykjavik and Kopavogur

Reykjavik and Kopavogur are Iceland’s two largest cities. Reykjavik is located on the western tip of Iceland and has the highest concentration of cultural institutions.

It’s also well equipped with many guided tours and things to do. If you like beautiful parks, Icelandic dishes, and fun festivals, add Reykjavik to your list.

For fishing, jeep extravaganzas, and waterfalls, spend a few days in Kopavogur.

Golden Circle Geysers

Google description for Geyser: A hot spring in which water intermittently boils, sending a tall column of water and steam into the air. One of the most popular points of interest is a driving route called the Golden Circle. The Circle starts in Reykjavik and continues one large loop inland, and then back around.

This loop contains two of the most popular geysers in Iceland; one (Geysir) no longer shoots water, but the other (Strokkur) shoots straight into the air on a regular schedule. In fact, according to Expert Vagabond, the general term “geyser” was named after this particular one in Iceland: Geysir.

Vik Village

Vik is the southernmost village in Iceland and contains a stunning beach with black sand and wild waves.

The water here is intense and deadly. Being on the windward side, the village receives the most rainfall. From far away, the view of the beach looks like flat, jet-black asphalt next to gigantic formations that resemble rectangular organ pipes at the bottom of the mountain.

The experience is one in a million, and nothing like you’ve ever seen before. Many legends of trolls trump around in Vik and incorporate into the history behind the stacked basalt formations called Reynisdrangar.

Northern Lights

The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis and Polar Lights, can be seen all over Iceland. The spectacular silky green and coral colors in the sky are the result of ionization and excitation of atmospheric constituents, which emit light of varying color and complexity. They remain throughout the year; the only reason they can’t be seen during the day is due to sunlight.

During the summer months, sunlight practically remains all day, so if you really want to see the astonishing display, plan your backpacking trip accordingly.

Akureyri

Akureyri is located in northern Iceland and has a much smaller population than the bigger, more popular Reykjavik. It’s also rated as one of the top places to visit for fishing, mud pots, waterfalls, ski fields (heli-skiing) and whale-filled bays.

Hlidarfjall is one of the most popular ski resorts that encompasses five lifts and provides classes to individuals as well as groups for skiing or snowboarding. If you want to feel the true spirit of Iceland, Akureyri is a great place to visit.

Food and Drink

Iceland’s food revolves around a lot of lamb and fish. For the best variety of food, stay in Reykjavik or Akureyri. Home-produced cheese and dairy products are magnificent … and sold over the country.

Alcohol is expensive overall. If you are a coffee like me, not to worry it is easy to find.

Restaurants here only contain what they have back in the kitchen, sometimes meaning it’s best to call ahead to observe what’s being served.

Fridrik V is a quaint restaurant that recommends reservations, located in Reykjavik, and is ranked number one on TripAdvisor. For a less intimate setting,

Laekjarbrekka provides a diverse menu with beef, salmon, soups, salads, seafood, and more.

Currency and Transportation

As of 2016, 1 Icelandic Krona equals.0078 US dollar.

So when you’re traveling throughout the country, don’t let the prices scare you. Renting bicycles around town cost roughly $23 USD/day.

Bussing around Iceland is an affordable and efficient means of transportation.

Reykjavik Excursions provides passes for backpackers that want to hop on a bus and travel at their own pace whether it is for the day or for the month.

For a great travel deal, visit Samferda, which is a popular websites that cater to adventurers who are interested in carpooling; send in a request to discover if anyone is headed in the same direction.
